'Canes Come Up with Rare Win over Warriors

08:49PM / Tuesday, September 20, 2011

DALTON, Mass. -- The Hoosac Valley girls' soccer team got one huge monkey off of its back on Monday afternoon. The Hurricanes did it by staying all over the backs of Wahconah.

Sophomore sweeper Courtney Hayer led a stifling defensive effort that blanked the Warriors and gave Hoosac a 2-0 win, its first over Wahconah in over a decade. Freshman goalie Megan Richardson also had a big game, stopping 10 shots to record her second consecutive shutout.

"Going into the game we knew it would be a battle," Hurricanes head coach Blair Mahar said. "We only fielded 13 players. We've played Wahconah well in the past, but we never managed to top them until yesterday.

"Courtney Hayer played the game of her life. Anybody who saw her play yesterday took notice. People need to watch out for her because she will be a force in the county. We also got tremendous efforts by center mids Danielle Beauchemin and Megan Rodowicz."

Beauchemin set up her team's first goal, finding senior Miranda Gajda for an open look in the 22nd minute of play. Freshman Marissa Felter then added the clincher, scoring unassisted six minutes into the second half.

Kelcie Yarmey came through with six saves in goal for the Warriors (1-3-1).

Hoosac (2-0-1) next plays Taconic at 6 p.m. on Thursday night. The game will be played on the campus of BCC.
