Drury's Bush Makes First Start a Memorable One

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- With five games in five days, Drury baseball coach Al Marceau knew he'd have to call on all of his resources to help the Blue Devils get through their tough schedule this week.
On Tuesday, Marceau handed the ball over to sophomore pitcher Alex Bush, who made his first career varsity start against Pittsfield. The young hurler didn't disappoint, tossing a complete game seven-hitter, allowing just one earned run and three walks to go along with four strikeouts. The Drury offense gave him a nice little 4-0 cushion to work with by scoring two runs apiece in both the first and second innings, and Bush was effective the rest of the way, cruising through seven innings of work in just 83 pitches.
"Alex did a great job of pitching to contact and throwing strikes all game," Marceau said. "We played well defensively behind him and were able to get a couple of double plays. With five games in five days, it was great that Alex finished what he started. He really helped us set up the pitching for the rest of the week."
Bush allowed single runs to the Generals in the fourth and sixth innings, but the Blue Devils (7-3) put the game out of reach with two runs in the bottom of the fifth frame. Junior Max Quinn (2 for 3) hit a key double to drive in a run in the fifth inning, while Drury also got key contributions from seniors Chase Preite (2 for 3 with a triple and two runs scored) and Tyler Benoit (1 for 3 with two RBI).
"Offensively, we did a nice job of taking walks and putting pressure on the defense," Marceau said. "We need to capitalize more consistently on good scoring opportunities, however."
The Blue Devils next Lenox at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
