Mount Anthony Stops Drury in its Tracks

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The Mount Anthony baseball team did the one thing only one other team has managed to do against Drury this year. That is, beat the Blue Devils at home.

The Patriots threw their two best pitchers at Al Marceau's club, and Drury didn't respond well, striking out 10 times and posting just one run despite outhitting Anthony 6-5 in the game. The loss dropped the Blue Devils to 11-5 on the year and 8-2 at home. It was just the second defeat the Devils have suffered in the last 10 games.

"It was a tough loss to a very good Mount Anthony squad," Marceau said. "Alex Bush had one rough inning, and it cost him the game. He pitched very well without really being able to go to his breaking ball. Offensively, we struggled getting a big hit when we needed it. Some of that was a bad approach on our part and some was excellent pitching. This is the first time since very early in the year that we stuck out that many times.

"We pitched well enough and played good enough defense to win but just couldn't push runs across."

Drury left four runners in scoring position in the game, including two in the fifth inning when the Devils had men on second and third base with nobody out. Unfortunately for the hosts, the next three batters struck out to end the frame. Senior Chase Preite had half of Drury's hits, going 3 for 4 with a run scored, while junior Joel Giorgi came through with an RBI single.

Bush allowed four earned runs through five innings of work to take the loss, striking out two and walking five. Giorgi fanned two and pitched two scoreless frames to finish the game.

The Blue Devils next play at St. Joe's at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
