Poor Fourth Dooms Mounties Against Rutland

Staff Reports

10:53AM / Sunday, April 17, 2011

RUTLAND, Vt. -- Things started off well for the Mount Greylock baseball team in its game against Rutland on Saturday. Sophomore starter Andrew Leitch looked good through the first three innings and the Mounties offense opened up a 4-0 lead.

Then the fourth inning came along, and the Raiders bats came alive to the tune of six runs. Rutland scored five more runs combined in the fifth and six innings, helping the hosts pull away for a 12-5 victory.

"Leitch was impressive for the first three innings, but he ran out of gas as the Rutland hitters finally caught up to him," Mounties head coach Steve Messina said. "The Rutland bats just wore down our young pitchers."

Overall, the Raiders collected 13 hits on the day against Leitch and junior Nick Zimmerman. Leitch held Rutland to just one run through the first three innings, but gave up four runs in the fourth to pave the way for Zimmerman entering the game. Zimmerman was charged with two more runs before the inning was through as the Raiders turned a 4-1 deficit into a 7-4 lead.

Sophomore Sean Houston led the Greylock offense with two hits, two runs scored and one run batted in.

The Mounties (1-2) next play at Hoosac Valley at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
