Blue Devils Play Sloppy in Loss to Spartans

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Starter Max Quinn and the Drury baseball team hung with Monument Mountain as long as they could on Monday night, but the Spartans eventually wore them both down, taking advantage of three Blue Devils' errors and outhitting the hosts 10-4 on their way to a 6-2 win at Joe Wolfe Field.

Quinn danced out of danger a number of times through the first four innings, but Monument finally came through with a clutch hit in the fifth inning that scored two runs to break a 1-1 tie. Drury (3-3), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss, got a run back in the bottom of the frame, but the Spartans sealed it for good by scoring three more runs in the top of the seventh.

"This was a tough loss," Blue Devils head coach Al Marceau said. "We played very sloppy at times, and Monument took advantage of it. They were able to come up with the big hit and we were not. If we continue to grow as a team and improve on our approach to the game, we should be fine."

The three errors committed by Drury kept innings going longer and forced Quinn to work harder to get out of dicey situations. Only two of the five runs Monument scored off of him were earned. The junior hurler finished with four strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work.

Sophomore Ryan Ouimet made the biggest impact at the plate for the Blue Devils, going 1 for 2 with a run batted in.

Drury next hosts Taconic at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
