WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Round 3 between the Mount Greylock and Frontier softball teams was a decisive win for the Mounties that sends them on to the state quarter-finals.

Emma Newberry went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs Tuesday to lead Mount Greylock to an 8-4 win over its Franklin West rivals, this time in the Division 4 State Tournament Sweet 16.

Earlier this season, the Mounties beat Frontier by scores of 17-15 and 6-5.

On Tuesday, second-seeded Mount Greylock took a 4-0 lead after two innings and never looked back in improving to 16-7 with a date against the winner of Thursday’s game between Maynard (15-6) and Hopkins Academy (17-2).

In the bottom of the first, Malia Koffi drew a one-out walk, and with two out, Newberry crushed the first pitch she saw well past the fence in center field to give her team a 2-0 lead.

One inning later, the hosts doubled their lead.

Mila Marcisz led off with a walk and went to third when Mia Filiault reached on an error with two out. After Kayleigh Jaros walked to load the bases, Koffi drove in a pair of runs with a single to the wall in center.

Koffi finished the day 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a pair of RBIs.

Frontier got on the board with a pair in the third, but the Mounties went up 5-2 in the bottom of the inning when Abby Whitley drove in Newberry.

A couple of Frontier errors in the fourth gave Mount Greylock three more runs and an 8-2 lead.

That was more than enough for Mount Greylock pitcher Kami Sweet, who struck out nine and allowed just one earned run in picking up the complete-game win.
