Drury Returns to Form with Win over Pittsfield

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Drury softball team certainly knows how to return a favor.

After losing to both Pittsfield and Mount Everett in the first four games of the season, the Blue Devils went 2-0 in rematch games in the past week, first defeating the Eagles last Friday by the same 2-1 score they beat Drury with the first time the two teams met. On Thursday, Mary Ann Maroni's club flipped the switch again, this time taking down the Generals 8-5 after Pittsfield had previously beaten them 8-6 in the first game of the year.

Junior Lyndsey DeGrenier was the story in the latest win for the Blue Devils, who now stand at 7-3 at the halfway point of the season. DeGrenier went 2 for 4 with three RBI and one run scored, helping her team jump out to a 7-2 lead after the first four innings of the game. After the Generals scored two runs on an error in the bottom of the first inning, Drury answered right back with three runs of its own in the top of the second frame. Senior Kelsey Ouimet delivered the biggest blow with a two-run single.

DeGrenier then helped the Blue Devils score three more runs in the third inning, smacking an RBI double before scoring on a hit by senior Kendra Hinkell. DeGrenier added a RBI triple in the fourth inning by lining a shot down the first-base line to open a five-run lead. Senior Ashley Mirante also had a nice day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with one run scored.

"It was another cold, windy, rainy and totally nasty day, but we played," Maroni said. "Although there were a total of nine errors on the day, there could have been many more under the circumstances. Once again, we decided to make things interesting by allowing one run in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh."

Pittsfield did work hard to get itself back in the game, but Drury starter Cat Record got the job done in the end, allowing four earned runs on six hits. She struck out one batter and walked four more to improve her season record to 6-2.

The Blue Devils next take on Taconic at the Doyle Softball Complex in Pittsfield at 8 p.m. Friday night.
