Blue Devils Bounce Back with Big Win over Millionaires

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- It's been a series of firsts for the Drury softball team this week. On Tuesday, the Blue Devils lost their first road game of the season in a 7-4 defeat to Lee. Luckily for Drury, however, it bounced back with its first home victory of the season on Wednesday, a 22-0 shellacking over visiting Lenox in a game shortened by the mercy rule.
Mary Ann Maroni's club now improves to 9-4 on the season with the win and is sitting pretty down the stretch with five out of its last seven games at home.
"On a bright, sunny day, we finally get our first win at home in our 13th game of the season," Maroni said. "Hopefully we didn't wear out our bats as we collected 16 hits on the day. Of the 16 girls that came to bat, nine of them had hits."
The Blue Devils sent 14 players to the plate in the first inning on their way to scoring eight runs. They followed that with five more runs in the second and nine more in the third, paving the way for the game to end after five and half innings due to the mercy rule. Five different players had at least two hits on the day for Drury, led by junior Lyndsey DeGrener, who went 3 for 3 with a single, double, triple and four RBI. Senior Kait Moresi went 2 for 3 with a run batted in and three runs scored, while freshman Cat Record finished the day with three hits, two RBI and four runs scored.
Record struck out four batters and walked none over three innings of work to improve her record to 8-3. She combined with fellow freshman Jordan Vanuni to limit the Millionaires to just four hits on the day, two of which came on doubles by Lenox catcher Kat Crawford.
The Blue Devils face a big test on Thursday, when rival Hoosac Valley comes to town for a 4 p.m. game.
