McCann Lays an Egg in Loss to Ware

WARE, Mass. -- After breaking out of the gates with a 5-1 record to start the 2011 season, the McCann Tech softball team had its first dud of the season on Monday, making eight errors in the field on the way to a 9-1 loss at Ware.

The Indians scored one run in the first inning before adding three more in the second frame to open up a quick 4-0 lead. One inning later, Ware pounced on the Hornets (5-2) for five more runs in the fourth to effectively put the game away. The only bright spot for Robin Finnegan's team was solo home run by junior Maria Denault in the top of the sixth inning that broke up an Indians' shutout.

"We traveled to Ware only to come out flat and could not get it together," Finnegan said. "We played poorly simple as that. We allowed nine runs, only two of which were earned. We had eight errors and left 11 runners on base. There's no excuses. We have to overcome long bus rides, weather and field conditions."

McCann's eight errors allowed the Indians to score nine runs on just eight hits. Senior Katlyn Haring was the tough-luck loser, surrendering just two earned runs over her four innings of work. Junior Erika Ziemba relieved Haring in the top of fifth inning and pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Hornets next host a talented Palmer squad at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
