Hornets Pick Up Big Win over Southwick

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- The McCann Tech softball team played a clean game and took advantage of a few Southwick miscues to earn a 6-3 win over Southwick on Monday afternoon.

The Hornets only made one error in the field, backing up senior starter Katlyn Haring, who allowed three earned runs on eight hits to improve her season record to 3-1. Haring stayed away from the big inning, only giving up single runs in the third, fifth and seventh frames. She allowed five walks and struck out four batters in a complete-game effort.

McCann (3-1) picked up nine hits of its own on offense, and opened up an early lead with a three-run second inning. Robin Finnegan's club then added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to open up a comfortable 5-1 lead.

"This was a big win for us," Finnegan said. "It's big because Southwick is in our conference, and we have not been able to beat them in the past five years. We took advantage of some costly errors by Southwick today. We played solid defense, but I would like to see our bats come around and take advantage of when we get runners on base."

Seven different Hornets had one hit on the day, while senior Bryana Malloy led the offense with two hits, one RBI and a run scored. The Rams hurt themselves with three errors in critical moments of the game.

McCann's game against Lenox was rained out today (Tuesday). The Hornets next play at Monson at 11 a.m. on Thursday.
