Malloy leads Hornets to Mercy-Rule Win Over Monson

MONSON, Mass. -- All the Bryana Malloy was missing on Wednesday was a triple.

Chances are the senior captain for the McCann Tech softball team isn't too disappointed in just missing on hitting for the cycle, not with the way she performed in the Hornets' 19-2 victory over Monson in a game shortened by the mercy rule. Malloy had a career day at the plate, smacking a grand slam to go along with a double, single and seven RBI. Thanks to Malloy, McCann (5-1) busted out for eight runs in the top of the first inning and later padded that lead by scoring six more runs in the third and five more in the fourth frame.

"We have not beaten them in three years, and to come out in the first inning like we did was just too much for them to come back from," Hornets head coach Robin Finnegan said. "We played solid defense, and Kate [Haring] pitched well. Hopefully we can keep the offense clicking when we face Ware, Palmer and Holyoke next week. These are three powerhouse teams, which means we will have to bring our A++ game. We are off to a great start this season, though, and I just love coaching this team because they have such a great work ethic and are gelling so well."

Haring only needed five innings to pick up her fourth win of the season. The senior hurler allowed two earned runs on five hits, striking out three and walking one. Fellow senior Amanda Cariddi also had a great day at the plate, going 3 for 5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Haring, Cassie Field and Brittany Briggs each contributed two hits to McCann's offensive onslaught.

The Hornets next take on Ware at 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon.
