Hornets Hang Around, Slide by Sabis in Ninth

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- It took nine innings, but the McCann Tech softball team finally got by Sabis on Tuesday, scoring six runs in the top of the ninth to earn a 9-3 victory on the road.
Senior Bryana Malloy gave the Hornets (8-4) a big lift in the inning by executing a suicide-squeeze that gave her team the go-ahead run. McCann's offense clicked after that, posting six runs on the board to put the game away. It was fitting that the Hornets got the win, especially since Robin Finnegan's club outhit the Bulldogs 13-4 and didn't make a single error in the field all day.
"It was a good game all around, and I was very pleased that the girls stayed focused after some questionable calls," Finnegan said. "I would like to see us hitting better at this point in the season. We need to jump on teams early instead of waiting until late in the game. Our defense was outstanding today, though. Erika Ziemba played great at first base, and Malloy stopped a couple of line drives at second base."
Malloy made a big impact from the plate as well, going 3 for 5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Senior Katlyn Haring finished a home run short of hitting for the cycle, going 3 for 5 with a run batted in. Senior Amanda Cariddi and junior Jamie LeTourneau each finished with two hits and one RBI in the game.
Haring also picked up the win on the mound, taking over for Ziemba at the start of the second inning. She improved her record to 6-3 on the season by allowing one earned run on four hits, striking out six and walking three. Down 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, McCann scored a single run to push the game into extra innings.
The Hornets next play at Mount Everett at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
