Hoosac Hammers Lenox in Mercy-Rule Win

ADAMS, Mass. -- The Lenox softball team did a good job of holding the Hoosac Valley offense to just seven hits on Wednesday. What the Millionaires did not do well was defend the balls the Hurricanes did put in play and keep them off the bases in the first place. Lenox ended up making six errors and walking several Hoosac batters, which resulted in a 16-0 mercy-rule win for the Hurricanes after just four and half innings.

Sophomore Ashley Ciepiela got the start and the win for Hoosac, striking out one batter and holding the Millionaires hitless in just two innings of work. Ciepiela left the game with a 12-0 lead, paving the way for freshman Caroline Tomkowicz to hurl the final three frames. The young pitcher did a great job in her first varsity appearance, recording five strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one walk.

"We didn't have our usual number of hits today, but we still played a great game," Hurricanes head coach Morgan Shafer said. "Ashley did a great job in the first two innings, and Caroline also did great for her first appearance in a varsity game."

Hoosac put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of six walks, two passed balls and two errors by Lenox. Senior Karli Schrade and junior Tanelle Ciempa then did damage with their bats in a six-run second inning. Schrade ripped an RBI triple before Ciempa added an RBI double. Ciepiela also recorded an RBI single before the inning was through.

Ciempa was the Hurricanes' biggest hitter of the day, going 2 for 3 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Hoosac, which improved to a perfect 8-0 with the win, will next play at Wahconah at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
