Tomich's Homer in Sixth Lifts Everett over Drury

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- It's too early in the season on too cold and damp of a day for the Drury and Mount Everett softball teams to play such clean softball. But there the Blue Devils and Eagles were, locked up in a pitchers' duel with both defenses playing error-free softball.

In games such as those, all it usually takes to win is one big extra-base hit late in the game. Mount Everett got such a hit from Claire Tomich, whose sixth-inning home run over the left-field fence was all the Eagles needed to earn a hard-fought 2-1 win over Drury on Wednesday.

Tomich went 3 for 3 in the game and ended up being the one player Blue Devils freshman pitcher Cat Record could never figure out. She recorded half of the six hits Record allowed in just the second varsity start of her career. The young hurler struck out four and walked none, while also picking up Drury's lone RBI of the day, a run-scoring single in the fifth inning.

"No one would expect a 2-1 ball game with no errors on such a cold and blustery day," Blue Devils head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "Exceptional ball was played by both teams. Cat was sharp on the mound, but Mount Everett's pitcher was a tad better."

Drury next plays at Rutland at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
