Devils Dodge Snowflakes in Win over Rutland

RUTLAND, Vt. -- Seniors Kait Moresi and Kendra Hinkell each came up with two hits and two RBI, and the Drury softball team got the better of the conditions and of Rutland in a 13-5 win on Thursday.
The Blue Devils (3-2) were held to just one run in a 2-1 loss to Mount Everett on Wednesday, but came on strong against the Raiders, scoring three runs each in both the third and fourth innings to open up a 7-1 lead. Moresi was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored, while Hinkell went 2 for 4 with one run scored and two runs batted in. She also was very busy playing defense at third base, collecting eight assists and one putout on the day.
"Once again, amazing defense was displayed by both teams under quite adverse conditions," Drury head coach Mary Ann Maroni said. "Not only was it cold, but it was also snowing. After a tough loss to Mount Everett yesterday, the girls brought their 'A' game."
Rutland made the game interesting with a four-run fifth inning to cut the Blue Devils' lead to 7-5. Jessie Smyski hit the biggest blow, blasting a two-run homer to put the pressure on freshman pitcher Cat Record. The young hurler responded nicely, however, by retiring the Raiders' lineup to close the inning and pitching two more scoreless frames to end the game. Drury then put the game away by scoring four runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.
Record improved her season mark to 2-1 by allowing four earned runs on eight hits, walking four and fanning two in a complete-game effort.
"Cat showed amazing composure on the mound by getting the side out after they scored their four runs," Maroni said.
The Devils will next play at Mount Greylock at 4:15 p.m. on Monday.
