WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Sabis’ Aaron Williams scored 33 en route to an 81-67 win over Mount Greylock on Tuesday night.

In a rematch of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 quarter-finals last year, both of these teams picked up where they left off. A high intensity match that the score didn’t necessarily tell the whole story.

Sabis (3-0) came out with full court pressure, speeding the game up on Mount Greylock (2-1) and forcing uncharacteristic turnovers. The game plan for Sabis was simple, go inside to Williams before getting anything going on the offensive end. Fortunately for the Mounties Sabis was not hitting 3-pointers early, and the help defense on Williams inside was working well. At the end of the quarter Sabis started to find a little bit of rhythm going on an 8-0 run to give them a 19-9 lead.

Second quarter action was a bit more even as Mount Greylock started to get things going offensively. Toby Foehl, Mount Greylock’s leading scorer with 19, scored eight in the quarter including two of his five 3s in the game to help keep things close going into the break. It seemed like every time Sabis looked like they would take over the game Mount Greylock had an answer to keep things within striking distance. With Sabis’s continued struggle from deep the Mounties were able to go in the halftime only down 11, 37-26.

The second half is when things started to turn for the worse for Mount Greylock as Sabis started to move the ball making it hard to stop Williams down low. It wasn’t just his scoring that was an issue, but his ability to pass the ball out of double teams to open teammates for points. Just like in the first half Mount Greylock rallied again to cut the lead to eight points before a big block/charge double foul on Toby Foehl giving him his fourth of the game.

The slight momentum from Mount Greylcok seemed to be gone as Sabis opened the gap with a six-point advantage in the quarter pushing the lead to 17 and making this game all but out of reach for Mount Greylock.

The fourth quarter would be more of the same as Mount Greylock seemed to run out of steam. Sabis went on a 21-4 run in the fourth quarter to end the game off.

Mount Greylock will look to get back on track Saturday against Hoosac Valley on the road.

Sabis will put their undefeated record on the line Thursday against a tough opponent in Putnam.
