Hornets' Strong Start Seals Second Straight Win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass — The offense of the McCann Tech girls' basketball team was the reason why the Hornets lost their first six games of the season. For the past two games, it's been the reason why McCann has won.
Kristen Lewis' squad earned its second straight win, a 46-37 victory at Sci-Tech, by putting up a season-high in points. McCann (2-6) jumped on the CyberCats early, opening a 16-2 lead after one quarter of play. The Hornets maintained a 22-11 lead at halftime and sealed the win by holding off a failed Sci-Tech comeback in the fourth quarter.
Senior guard Ashley Alibozek got the ball rolling for McCann, scoring all 16 of her team's points in the first quarter. She followed up a season-high 16-point effort in a win over Putnam with a career-high 23 points against the CyberCats. Overall, Alibozek made eight baskets, four of which came from behind the arc, and pulled down six rebounds.
"Ashley played very hard and was able to finish on some important shots," Lewis said. "She started our team off by scoring all of the points in the first quarter. As Sci-Tech started to guard her and defend her with a deny defense, the other players on our team were able to open up and score some easy baskets. Our team played together, and the intensity on the floor was contagious. We are looking forward to the next game."
Senior forward Cassie Field chipped in with eight points, while junior guard Mary Nguyen did the dirty work for the Hornets, snagging a team-high 12 rebounds. The CyberCats were led by Brandi Bass, who finished the game with 16 points.
McCann next plays host to Southwick at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.
