TURNERS FALLS, Mass. – Emma Goewey scored 19 points, and Maggy Sarnacki added 17 Friday as the Mount Everett girls basketball team beat McCann Tech, 42-34, in the consolation game of the Eagles Holiday Classic at Franklin Tech.

Goewey finished with a double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds, and did most of her damage in the post, scoring 18 points through three quarters.

Sarnacki helped Mount Everett pull ahead early with its running game and knocked down a couple of 3-pointers in the third quarter.

The senior guard contributed some key steals in the first half at the top of Mount Everett’s 2-3 zone as the Eagles outscored the Hornets, 13-6, in the second quarter to take a 23-16 edge into half-time.

“She was being aggressive on the defensive end, which obviously led to a lot of layups,” Mount Everett coach Josh King said. “We were seven deep tonight. We’ve got one more who is not here. It’s not like we’re running out 20 kids and pressing.

“We dug through. Maggy was super aggressive in the first half. Julia [Devoti] did a good job in the last minute getting a big steal and also getting a couple of deflections.”

After a back-and-forth first quarter, McCann took its last lead at 14-12 when Emily Glasier (17 points) scored in transition early in the second.

But Goewey scored on the blocks to tie it and gave the Eagles the lead for good moments later when she got to the line and converted the second of her two free throws.

Aliyah Creamer hit from the right wing, Goewey finished in the post and Sarnacki closed a 9-0 run with a steal and layup to make it 21-14.

And the Eagles never looked back.

But McCann Tech (0-2) did make a contest of it late.

Macey Tatro (seven points, 11 rebounds) scored the Hornets’ last six points in the third quarter as McCann Tech trimmed a 14-point deficit to a 38-29 score heading to the fourth.

A sluggish final period for both teams offensively saw McCann Tech pull within five when Hannah Boisvert scored over Goewey to make it 39-34 with 1 minute, 36 seconds left on the clock.

After the teams traded empty possessions, Sarnacki hit the front end of a one-and-one with 58 seconds left to make it a six-point game. Then after a McCann Tech offensive rebound to give the Hornets a second chance to make it a one-score game, Devoti got that steal and lay-in to provide the final margin with eight seconds left.

Boisvert, who had five rebounds, a couple of blocks and a couple of assists to go with her seven points, was named to the all-tournament team.

Goewey represented the Eagles on the all-tourney squad.

“I was talking to [Goewey] at half and said, just recognize that they’re going to try and take charges, and you’ve got to trust your drop step, trust your moves and things like that,” King said. “And you’ve got to use your teammates. The thing that gets me sometimes is a lot of times we make passes we don’t have to make. We force it. And that’s something we continue to grow and learn from.”

The Eagles (1-1) get their next chance to grow on Monday when they travel to Lenox.

McCann Tech will look for its first win of the season on Tuesday at home against Hampden Charter.
