NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Marlee Montagna scored 12 points Wednesday to lead the Agawam girls basketball team to a 45-39 win over Drury on Wednesday night.

Drury went down, 13-0, early and did not score until the 2 minute, 35 second mark of the first quarter.

But the Blue Devils roared back in the third quarter to erase a 13-point half-time deficit and tie the game, 30-30.

“Unfortunately, we expended a lot of energy to get back in the game and just ran out of gas in the fourth,” Drury coach Ian Downey said. “A couple of careless turnovers resulting in some transition points allowed them to extend the lead enough that we just couldn’t recover.”

Bella Laprise scored eight of her 10 points for Agawam in the fourth quarter, when the visitors outscored Drury, 10-5.

Norah Wood led the Blue Devils with 11 points, and Jacinta Felix scored 10. Each scored seven of her points in the third quarter, when Drury outscored Agawam, 20-8.

“But the main thing is we fought and didn’t give up,” Downey said. “Which was important. The team in the third quarter is the team I love to coach and the team that I see so much potential in. When we play these better teams we just need to be able to put 32 minutes together.”

Drury (2-4) will look to snap a three-game skid on Friday when it hosts Monument Mountain.
