NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Hannah Herrick scored a game-high 15 points, and the Mount Everett girls basketball team used defense to spark a pivotal third-quarter run in a 39-24 win over McCann Tech on Wednesday night.
The Eagles got off to a slow start on offense, managing just a 13-11 half-time advantage. But Mount Everett coach J. Scott Rote said it was defense that kept his team in the game.
In the third, that defense was decisive.
"In the second half, we changed up the defenses, added pressure after a score and went on a run for a 12-4 advantage in the third, holding them to one field goal and two foul shots," Rote said. "Hannah Herrick got the hot hand in the second half to take charge in the scoring column while [Deseraye Conaway] was sitting with four fouls.
"[Herrick] sparked a run with a score off a steal then followed that up with a 3-pointer from the wing to extend our lead to double digits before the end of the third."
In the fourth quarter, Herrick added six points and Hannah Joyce had four to keep the Eagles on top.
Eileen Zajac scored a team-high seven, and Emijah Barton added six for the Hornets.
"They were much bigger than us, but we did a nice job on the offensive boards," Rote said. "Hannah Joyce led us with 12 rebounds to go with her six points. Kayla Krom added seven rebounds off the bench and played strong defense in the post."
Mount Everett (3-0) enjoys a holiday hiatus before getting ready for its home opener on Jan. 3 against Drury.
