CHESHIRE, Mass. -- On Sept. 16, just three games into the season, the Hoosac Valley boys soccer team took home its second win of the season after traveling to Dalton and beating Wahconah 1-0, in an intense match under the lights.
Monday morning, Wahconah earned its revenge, traveling to Cheshire to play the Hurricanes in a 7-0 victory.
The Hurricanes are down numbers due to injuries, a few being some key players, Keegan McGrath and Nate Wojtaszek, who play in the midfield.
But despite injuries on Hoosac's end; Wahconah coach John Kovacs said his team has improved since its first meeting with the Hurricanes.
"We've been practicing better lately and I think what we've been doing in practice we did today," Kovacs said. "I think we surprised them a little bit because the first game they were awesome, they hustled more than us the first game and that was the big difference, they've got some injuries, but we've been slowly improving."
Wahconah led at halftime, 5-0. with Kyle Lyman leading the team with two first-half goals -- three total for the game.
"Wahconah was very good on the day and came to play today," Hoosac coach Mike Russo said. "Unfortunately, Hoosac Valley did not."
Unfortunately for the Hurricanes, some mistouches and miscommunications led to two own goals in the first half; the first one being the first goal on the game just four minutes in.
Nick Schnieder added the fifth goal in the ninth minute to give his team some comfort going into the second half.
Wahconah came out just as strong in the second half -- sending the ball up the line and crossing it into the 18, which earned it two more goals for 7-0 victory.
The first came from Lyman with 19 minutes on the clock and the second four minutes later from Cole Accardi.
"We told them at half to just stay sharp and each line do their job and maintain their passing," Kovacs said. "We've been passing better, the last two games with been getting it to the flanks, crossing it in and getting one touch goals and that's huge for us."
Wahconah (1-7-1) travels to Mount Greylock for a 7 p.m. game Thursday evening. Hoosac (3-5-4) travels to Clapp Park to face St. Joseph Wednesday afternoon.
