CARVER, Mass. – Matt Lowe allowed just one unearned run in 6 and two-thirds innings on the mound on Monday as the Mount Everett baseball team upset No. 5 Carver in the first round of the Division 5 State Tournament.

The 28th-seeded Eagles (11-9) advance to face No. 12 Douglas on Wednesday in the Round of 16. Douglas (9-10) on Sunday beat Millis, 6-1.

On Monday, Lowe struck out eight, walked two and scattered six hits before giving the ball to Sean Warren, who struck out the second hitter he faced for to get the game’s final out and pick up the save.

“Matt Lowe had great command today and shut down Carver,” Mount Everett coach Dan Lanoue said.

Lowe got all the run support he would need before he threw a pitch.

Riding the momentum of a one-run win in the preliminary round, Mount Everett scored three times in the top of the first.

Darius Taliaferro worked a leadoff walk, and Lowe doubled to right to put two runners in scoring position.

Jacob Kreis then brought both home with a line drive double to center field to make ti 2-0.

Kreis went to third on a fly ball to the outfield and came home when Warren reached on an infield single to make it 3-0.

That is where it stood until the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, Heyden Cutlip drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on J.J. Schneider’s sacrifice bunt.

With two out, Taliaferro doubled to right to drive in Cutlip and make it 4-0.

Lowe gave up a double with one out in the bottom of the seventh, and that runner eventually came home on an error off the bat of the first man Warren faced.

Monday’s win marked Mount Everett’s first in the Round of 32 since the beginning of the statewide tournament format in 2022.
