Doris L. Benson, 79
STAMFORD, Vt. - Doris L. Benson, 79, of Main Road died Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center.Born in in the town of Florida, Mass., on July 14, 1935, a daughter of Lyman and Doris Mogul Burdick, she attended schools in Florida and graduated from Drury High School in North Adams, Mass.
Mrs. Benson was employed for many years as a certified nursing assistant at Sweet Brook Care Centers in Williamstown, Mass., and as a personal home-care provider for several families. She had worked at the former Whitcomb Summit and later at the former Heartwellville Lodge.
She was an active member of Stamford Community Church, where she was a member of the mission committee. She was a longtime member of the Masonic Order of Eastern Star and volunteered at many charity fundraisers in support of the Shriners and their hospitals. She also participated in many parades as a Shriner clown.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and camping and traveling with her late husband, Adelbert "Joe" Adney Benson.
Mr. Benson, whom she married Oct. 16, 1954, died Sept. 8, 2007.
She leaves her son, Michael Benson of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters, Phyllis Porter of Burlington, Mass., and Linda Pettigrew of Wellesley, Mass.; two brothers, Glenn Burdick of the town of Florida and Edward Burdick of North Adams; five grandchildren Billy Joe Piantoni, Joshua Piantoni, Sarah Hamm, Nathaniel and Michaela Benson, and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Terry Jo Piantoni, in 1988 and two sisters and three brothers, Anita Kuczynski, Beatrice Bishop, Lyman Burdick, Clayton Burdick and Mearl Burdick.
FUNERAL NOTICE - Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Benson will take place Tuesday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at Stamford Community Church. A reception will follow at the church hall. Burial will take place in Millard Cemetery in the spring.
