Lionel E. Roy, 88
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - Lionel E. "Nel" Roy, 88, of Kemp Avenue died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital.Born in North Adams on Oct. 5, 1920, a son of Calix "Chick" Roy and Edith Trombley Roy, he attended city schools and graduated from Drury High School. He also attended the former Bliss Business College.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served in its Air Forces.
Mr. Roy was employed as the production manager at the former W.R. Grace Co. in Adams for 38 years until his retirement.
He was a communicant of the former St. Francis of Assisi Church. He enjoyed golf and was a longtime member, past president and club champion of the North Adams Country Club. In his younger years, he played softball and was named his team's most valuable player. His other passions were fly fishing in the Deerfield River and salmon fishing on Lake Ontario. He was a member of the Frank R. Stiles Post 125 American Legion.
He and his wife, the former Ethel Pekelder, were married on July 13, 1946.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Daryl Roy and his wife, Mireille, of Clarksburg; two brothers, Rolland Roy of Pownal, Vt., and George C. Roy of North Adams; two sisters, Rita Styczynski of North Adams and Exilda Suprenant of Adams, a granddaughter, Danielle Roy of Big Sky, Mont., and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings Donald Roy, Beatrice Pierce, Melva Hoynoski and a sister who died in infancy.
