'Snowblind' by Thor Wickstrom

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. —  Studio21south will present "Snow Show," a group show featuring paintings and drawings that either embrace or defy the spirit of winter, from Feb. 12 through March 14.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, Feb. 13, from 6 to 9.

Landscape is a common thread and the exhibition includes artists who work locally. Subjects range from Maine summers to the deep winter of working farms in northern Wisconsin.

Participating artists include Frank Bruckmann of New Haven, Conn., Eric March of New York City, Bobbie Puttrich of Chicago, Ill., Karen Walter of Bostonand regional artists Frank Curran, Karen Kane, Sylvie Kantorovitz, John Leavey, Thor Wickstrom and Rodney Wilkinson.

The show marks Walter's return to the Beaver Mill, formerly home to the Contemporary Artists Center, where she was an artist in residence for several years. Her small-scale mixed-media works on paper blur the distinction between drawing and painting. Walter's art is inspired by natural forms, and will remind those familiar with her work of her series of drawings based on the Natural Bridge in North Adams.

Bruckmann is working on site on Monhegan Island, Maine, the chosen summer art colony of artists including the Wyeths, Rockwell Kent and Edward Hopper. He has been shipping paintings to studio21south as they are completed.

A recipient of the Prix de Rome, Leavey studied with and assisted Edwin Dickinson (1891-1978), and his permanent collections include the Hirshhorn collection in Washington, D.C. and the Museo della Citta da Roma, Italy.

Studio21south is located at 189 Beaver St. (Route 8), approximately 1 mile from Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Information: 413-652-2141 or studio21south@gmail.com.
