SteepleCats' Rivera Named Co-Pitcher of the Week
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — After striking out 10 batters in the SteepleCats' 3-1 win over the New Bedford Bay Sox on Friday night, right-hander Stephen Rivera has been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League Co-Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Rivera pitched 5 2/3 innings against the Bay Sox on Friday and allowed just one unearned run on two hits and one walk. Eight of the first nine outs Rivera recorded that night were by strikeout.
Rivera, who shared the weekly honor with Holyoke's Maxx Catapano, came to North Adams after he finished his sophomore season at St. John's University. He went 4-2 with a 3.60 ERA in 24 appearances for the Red Storm in 2010.
The Red Storm won the 2010 Big East Tournament and competed in the 2010 NCAA baseball championship tournament before being eliminated by Virginia in the Charlottesville Regional.
The Staten Island, N.Y., native is 1-0 on the season for the SteepleCats with a 0.84 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 10 2/3 innings pitched.
The SteepleCats return to action Tuesday night when they host the Bristol Collegiate Baseball Club at Joe Wolfe Field at 6:30 p.m.
