Bidwell House Museum to Host Early America Lecture

TYRINGHAM, Mass. — The Bidwell House Museum is offering a talk  by Professor John Demos on Saturday, Aug. 28 at 10 a.m. on the subject of communications in America in the 1700s. His talk, part of "The Lost World of Early America" series, is entitled "The Supernatural World: Religion, Magic, Witchcraft and 'Wonders' in the 1700s."

Demos, Samuel Knight Professor of American History Emeritus at Yale University, holds degrees from Harvard University and Berkeley. He also studied at Oxford University and at the Institute for Psychoanalysis in Chicago. He is the author of many prize-winning books, including "The Unredeemed Captive" (1994), winner of the Francis Parkman Award.

This is the final talk in the series. The community is invited. Demos will suggest some readings, and discussion is invited. Advance registration is encouraged.

The talk will take place at the Tyringham Union Church, Main Road (a five-minute drive from the Bidwell House Museum). The $15 suggested donation benefits the museum.

The Bidwell House Museum, 100 Art School Road, Monterey, is open every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with tours on the hour. The museum grounds – 192 acres of woods, fields, historic stone walls, trails and picnic sites – are open all year free of charge. Multiple Departments Respond to Lanesborough Structure Fire

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire off Narragansett Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Fire Department received a call from the owner of 6 Bangor St. reporting a smoke and flames at around 1:44 p.m.

Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the the 1940s single-family ranch home in the thickly settle neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries. 

"The homeowner was outside doing some work, evidently, opened the door when she came back in the house, and there were flames and smoke, so she backed out and called us, and that's all we know right now," Deputy Fire Chief Glen Storie said around 2:35 p.m. 

The fire was out at that time, and first responders observed "quite a bit of damage" to the home. The cause is still under investigation. 

Lanesborough, Cheshire, and Pittsfield departments responded to the scene, and Hancock covered the station during the call. 

"The first crew in knocked the fire right down with the first engine," Storie said. 

Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home. Part of Narragansett Avenue and Bangor Avenue were blocked off while firefighters battled the blaze.
