PITTSFIELD, Mass. — The Women's Imaging Center at Berkshire Medical Center will present four programs in September as part of its Living Beyond Cancer educational series. All of the events are free and open to the public.

On Tuesday, Sept. 14, a program on stress reduction for cancer and post-cancer patients will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Health Information Room adjacent to the BMC main lobby. The program will be presented by Juliana Reiss, PsyD, from the BMC Psychiatry and Behavioral Science Department. The event is funded by a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

A program on nutrition post-cancer treatment will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 21 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the BMC Medical Arts Complex, 5th floor classroom. The program, which includes a cooking demonstration, will be presented by Marsha Schulte, a registered dietitian at BMC, and Linda Ruberto. This program is also funded by a grant from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.

On Wednesday, Sep. 22, a screening of the film, "No Hair Day," will be presented in the Radiation Oncology waiting area at BMC.


Finally, on Sunday, Sept. 26, the art workshop "Nature, Nurture and the Arts," will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Wedgewood Stables, R&R Wirtes Farm on North Main Street in Lanesborough. The program will feature guided meditation, observing horses, oil pastels, poetry and walking on unpaved surfaces. No specific art skills are required and lunch is included. The presenter is Eileen Mahoney, a Certified Expressive Arts Therapist. Due to space limitations, advance registration is required for this event. Multiple Departments Respond to Lanesborough Structure Fire

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Multiple fire departments responded to a structure fire off Narragansett Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. 

The Fire Department received a call from the owner of 6 Bangor St. reporting a smoke and flames at around 1:44 p.m.

Firefighters arriving on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the the 1940s single-family ranch home in the thickly settle neighborhood.

The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries. 

"The homeowner was outside doing some work, evidently, opened the door when she came back in the house, and there were flames and smoke, so she backed out and called us, and that's all we know right now," Deputy Fire Chief Glen Storie said around 2:35 p.m. 

The fire was out at that time, and first responders observed "quite a bit of damage" to the home. The cause is still under investigation. 

Lanesborough, Cheshire, and Pittsfield departments responded to the scene, and Hancock covered the station during the call. 

"The first crew in knocked the fire right down with the first engine," Storie said. 

Smoke could be seen coming from the back of the home. Part of Narragansett Avenue and Bangor Avenue were blocked off while firefighters battled the blaze.
