MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. — The Williams College golfers battled darkness and rainy conditions Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Fall NESCAC Qualifier, hosted by Wesleyan University at Lyman Orchards Golf Club.

The Ephs were unfazed by the inclement weather as they put up one of the finest one-day team scores in recent memory. At the par-72 layout, the team shot a two-over 290, which puts it in first place halfway through the tournament. Trinity College, in second place after Saturday's play, trails by eight strokes. The medalist is Colby College's Taggie Martin, who fired a three-under par 69.

The Eph sophomores once again showed their incredible talent and depth today, led by Matt McCarron. He fired a one-under par 71, the first subpar round by a Williams golfer this fall. He is in a three way tie for 2nd place. Fellow sophomore Cody Semmelrock carded an even-par round of 72. Classmates Dylan Dethier and Ross Bowen rounded out the scoring, turning in 73 and 74, respectively. While his score did not count Saturday, first year Jake Goldenring posted a steady 75.

"We've been preaching all fall the need for consistency and a positive attitude and today's round was just what the doctor prescribed," Williams head coach Rick Pohle said. "I won't say we got off to the greatest of starts on holes 1 thru 3, but everyone took their games up a notch and brought it home."

Jake Goldenring started with a double bogey and gutted out a fine 75 - Cody Semmelrock had 16 pars, a bogey and a birdie for his 72 - Dylan Dethier  was 3 over after the third hole; yet had a chance for an even par round had his birdie putt on 18 dropped - Ross Bowen continued his stellar play this fall with a 74 and Matt McCarron found his stride after a bogey on hole 7 put him 2 over for the round. He blitzed the rest of the course at 3 under par to finish with a great 71.

"We had a very good day today, but haven't accomplished anything yet - any one of 6 teams still have a shot of qualifying for the top four spots in the spring championship, which is the NCAA Qualifier,"  Pohle said. "We need to keep playing well to guarantee our ticket to the finals. If we do that we may well have the chance to host that championship in April."

While the top four schools from this event will move on to the spring championship, it would serve Williams well to maintain its first place position. The winner tomorrow will get to host the Spring NESCAC Championship in April. The Ephs will tee off in the final wave of schools Sunday at 12:50 p.m..

Williamstown Board Opts to Negotiate with College on Water St. Lot

By Stephen DravisiBerkshires Staff

Newly elected board member Nate Budington, far left, participates in his first in-person meeting along with, from left, Matt Neely, Stephanie Boyd, Peter Beck, Shana Dixon and Town Manager Robert Menicocci.
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Select Board on Monday decided to enter into negotiations with Williams College on the sale of the vacant town-owned lot at 59 Water St.

But the board members made it clear that the college's proposal to acquire the lot is a starting point, not a final deal that the elected officials would accept.

"For the sake of continued conversation, I'm in favor of [awarding Williams the site], but if this process wasn't continued with the opportunity for further negotiation, I wouldn't vote to continue this," Peter Beck said. "I think that next step is necessary for us to get to a yes on this."

"I think there's wide agreement on that," Matthew Neely said just before the 5-0 vote to enter talks with the college.

Williams was the sole respondent to a town-issued request for proposals to develop the former town garage site, currently a dirt lot.

The college's stated intent is to build a new Facilities office and create up to 170 parking spaces at 59 Water Street. That use will allow the college to redevelop the current Facilities building site and parking lot as part of a reconception of the school's indoor athletic and recreation facilities.

Under the terms of the RFP, the college's proposal was subjected to review by an ad hoc advisory committee to the town manager, who brought the question to the Select Board. That board will have the final say on any purchase and sales agreement.
