Adams Farmers Market Canceled

ADAMS, Mass. — Even with efforts to continue the Adams Farmers Market privately this summer, the new organizers could not garner enough support from vendors.

The group posted on its Facebook page this week that because it could not get any farmers or vendors to commit to the market, the market will be canceled this summer.

"We put in all we had to make this market work but unfortunately you can't have a farmers market without farmers. We had hoped to keep this going for our town but it just hasn't worked in our favor," they wrote.

Adams residents Ashley Priester, Kelly Field and Glen Field took the market into their own hands after the town announced it would no longer use town resources to run the market.

On market's Facebook page, the organizers wrote they could not get one farm to commit to the market and most farmers have already signed up with other local markets. North Adams, Williamstown and Pittsfield all operate summer markets; Pittsfield has also been holding some winter markets.

They added that without a budget from the town all advertisement and startup funding would come out of pocket. This lead to a rate increase for participation.

The organizers did thank the townspeople on Facebook who supported the market.

"The support from the towns people/potential shoppers has been amazing. I thank you all for that. I know there are a few people who are in the position right now we were in when we heard the town wasn't continuing this venture. We absolutely wanted to see this work out and I personally know we would have succeeded at this because we were doing all we could with the very limited time we had to get this off the ground and I think we have already done wonders."

The organizers also announced on the Facebook page that those who purchased a cash calendar can contact them via Facebook and receive a refund.

The Adams Farmers Market organizers declined to speak to iBerkshires.com.

Adams Picks Select Board Candidates; Cheshire Nixes Appointed Assessor

By Tammy DanielsiBerkshires Staff
ADAMS, Mass. — Voters chose incumbent John Duval and newcomer Ann Bartlett for the two open seats on the Selectmen.

Bartlett, a co-owner of the former Red Carpet Diner, garnered the most votes at 791, more than 300 above the other three challengers, and Duval was returned for another three-year term with 685.

Incumbent Howard Rosenberg's decision sparked a five-way race for the two seats. Coming in third was Jerome Socolof with 465, Mitchell Wisniowski with 446 and former board member Donald Sommer with 367.

All results are unofficial.

Wisniowski did win a seat on the Parks Commission and Michael Mach outpolled challenger Timothy Kitchell Jr. 887-407 to stay on the Planning Board.

Frederick Lora appears to have bested Jennifer Solak as Adams representative to the Hoosac Valley Regional School District by 10 votes. The unofficial tally is 814-804, with Lora gaining 674 votes to Solak's 620 in Adams; the voted flipped in Cheshire with Solak winning 184-140 but not enough to overcome the gap. Robert Tetlow Jr., running unopposed, was returned as the Cheshire representative.

Write-ins for Board of Health and Redevelopment Authority, which had no candidates, were still being tallied.
