Louis G. Haddad, 89

LENOX, Mass. — Louis George Haddad, 89, of Devonshire Estates, Lenox, husband of the late Anna Norman Haddad, died peacefully on February 9, 2017, at Berkshire Medical Center.

Born in Pittsfield, Mass., on April 28, 1927, the son of George A. and Freda Shaker Haddad, he was a graduate of Berkshire School. Continuing his education, he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Business Administration and The General Motors Institute.

A Korean War veteran, Mr. Haddad enlisted with the United States Army on February 25, 1952. In February 1953, he earned the rank of Private First Class (Technical) and served a year and a half overseas. He was honorably discharged on February 18, 1954. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Mr. Haddad started his career in the automotive business in 1951, working with his father at Haddad Pontiac located at 55 West St. During the Urban Renewal in 1968, Mr. Haddad and his father, George, were required to move the Pontiac Dealership. They found land on the Pittsfield-Lenox Road and built a new Pontiac Dealership. Mr. Haddad acquired the Toyota Franchise in 1970.

His children, George and Elizabeth joined the business which allowed him to grow the business even more. He purchased what was known as Haddad Chrysler Plymouth Dodge Jeep and Eagle in Bennington, Vt. Mr. Haddad never really retired. He enjoyed coming into work every day, reading the newspaper, going through his mail and conversing with the employees.

Mr. Haddad was an avid sportsman who loved fishing, deer hunting, and bird hunting. He loved to shoot skeet and trap at the Lee Sportsman's Club. He also played golf and in his younger years he was on many candle pin bowling leagues. He was a member of the Austerlitz Club. A couple of his favorite pastimes were his trips to the casino and telling jokes to people at Mascots and Patrick's Pub.

Mr. Haddad is survived by a son, George L. Haddad and his wife, Shari, of Pittsfield; a daughter, Elizabeth M. Sheehan and her husband, Edward, of Dalton; five grandchildren, Anna, Matthew, Daniel, Julia, and Benjamin; as well as nieces, Karen Crofts, Susan Frederick, Michele Guercio and Jennifer Healy.

He was predeceased by a sister, Maryanne Healy, and her husband Jim.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dale Cease who brought Mr. Haddad his favorite newspaper, "The Daily News,” and visited with him every day, and also thank German Bermudz, who drove him around whenever asked. Both men are employees of Haddad Toyota and always made time in their busy day to help him out. The family would also like to thank Dr. Mann and the rest of the Step Down Unit Team at Berkshire Medical Center for the compassionate care he received.

Funeral notice: Funeral services for Louis George Haddad will be held Friday, February 17, 2017, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., at St. Charles Church celebrated by Rev. Peter A. Gregory, Pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Thursday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Dery Funeral Home in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lee Sportsman Club Youth Buckshots Program or the Onota Fishing Club in care of the Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
