Harold L. Moffitt, 79

BENNINGTON, Vt. — Harold Leon Moffitt, 79, a resident of Bennington, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 18, 2017, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

The son of George and Hattie (O'Connell) Moffitt, he was born in Bennington on May 6, 1938, and grew up in Shaftsbury. Harold was a US Marine veteran; he was honorably discharged at the rank of Lance Corporal. Harold had worked all his life in the construction industry as a carpenter.

He loved to build and was a skilled craftsman. His favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing.

He leaves his daughter, Jennifer Lynn Moffitt of Bennington; her children Keegan Coon and Ava Sweet; stepsons Todd Mears of Derry, N.H., and Donald Mears of Bennington; step-daughters Melody Elliott of Cambridge, N.Y., and Tammy Mears of Bennington; brothers Sherman Moffitt of Peru and Howard Moffitt of Georgia; sister Marion Cross of Shaftsbury; a special nephew, Raymond Moffitt; and several step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by siblings Raymond, Donald, Edward, Duncan and Calvin Moffitt, Lorraine Petras and Joyce Laflamme.

Funeral notice: Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017, at 4 p.m. at the Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the family lot in Maple Hill Cemetery in Shaftsbury. Memorial gifts may be made to the SVMC Cancer Crusaders in care of Hanson Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, 213 West Main Street, Bennington.
