Bernard G. Colo, 68

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Bernard Gabriel Colo, 68, of Medway, Mass., died Sunday, September 17, 2017, at Highgate Manor in Dedham, Mass., following a short illness.

He was born in Pittsfield, Mass., on November 25, 1948, son of Isaac B. and Angelena (Jammallo) Colo.  He attended North Adams parochial schools and graduated from the former St. Joseph High School.  Bernie received his BA in Sociology from St. Anselm's College in 1970 and received his M. Ed in Educational Media/Technology from Boston University in 1978.

Bernie retired as Director of Academic Media Services at Providence College, where he worked for 15 years. Prior to that, he served in the same role at Simmons College, Skidmore College, New England College and St. Anselm's College. He earned his Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) in 2005. Bernie was a member of the Consortium of College and University Media Centers (CCUMC). A fierce defender of “the teachable moment”, he served as consultant on the use of media technologies to promote the academic learning process.

He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Medway, Mass., where he sang in the choir and was a former Lector, Eucharistic Minister and CCD teacher. He enjoyed gardening and utilized the fruits of his garden in the kitchen. Bernie was a great cook and everyone loved his food as much as he loved cooking for them. His keen interest in cars was realized driving his fathers’ 1986 El Camino. An avid photographer, Bernie always had a camera at the ready for that special image.

Survivors include his wife, M. Elizabeth (Wentworth) Colo, whom he married on August 2, 1975; and his son, Marc B. Colo, and his wife, Olga, of Holliston, Mass. He also leaves his rescue dog, his beloved buddy, Duke.

Funeral notice: A Funeral Mass for Bernard G. Colo will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church in Medway on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at a later date in Village Cemetery in Readsboro, Vt. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapel, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.
