Thomas F. McKnight, 72

LANESBOROUGH, Mass. — Thomas Forrest McKnight, 72, of 801 North Main St., Lanesborough, passed away peacefully at his home May 12, 2018, after a long illness.

Born June 16, 1945, to the late Forrest McKnight and Mary Bolotin McKnight, he was a graduate of Mt. Greylock Regional High School, where he was a standout athlete in both football and track.

He married the former Helen Massery on September 2, 1972, and for 45 years they remained best friends until his death. Thomas was a concrete contractor for many years, owning his own foundation installation company. His previous professions were as a Union Laborer, Chef at Mill on the Floss Restaurant as well as an employee of General Electric.

A member of both the NRA and SCI, he was an avid outdoorsman and a true woodsman. One of the few left of a disappearing generation where a handshake was firm, you looked a man in the eye and meant what you said, and a man's word meant more than anything a fancy lawyer could write on paper.

He was a simple man whose greatest accomplishment in his own opinion, aside from his family, was getting his best friend and highly decorated Vietnam Veteran Greg Noonan acknowledged on the Miner Road Bridge in Lanesborough, where the plaque is proudly displayed. He spent most of his retired time working around his property and planting flower gardens for his beautiful wife. To his closest friends he was known as Dad, Grampy and Tom and will be sadly missed by all those who knew him as such.

Besides his wife Helen, he leaves his daughter, Michele McKnight-Tero of Mohawk N.Y.; two sons, Scott McKnight and his wife Kristina of Peru and Mitchell McKnight and his wife Cara of Pittsfield;  Michael Noonan, son of Greg Noonan, whom he thought of as his third son; his brother Richard McKnight and his wife Judith of Lanesborough; his sister Audrey Anderson of Vernon Conn.: 10 grandchildren, Jessica Phillips, Patrick and Ethan Bartlett, Forrest, Arden, Scout and Cannon McKnight, Chance, Cantor and Charlotte McKnight; as well as many nieces and nephews all of whom he loved very much.

Funeral notice: Funeral services for Thomas will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in care of Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
