John H. Swenson, 97

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. â€' John Henry Swenson, 97, of 18 Willow St. died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted Friday. Born in New Brunswick, N.J., on June 24, 1904, son of Robert G. and Margaret Prince Swenson, he attended school there and moved with his family to Rowe in 1919. Mr. Swenson was first employed as a paper worker by the former Deerfield Glassine Paper Co. in Monroe Bridge. From 1952 to 1953, he worked as a troubleshooter for the company's Canadian plant in Quebec. He was the subject of a full-page feature article in "The Paperworker," a trade magazine. He retired from the company and its successor, Deerfield Specialty Papers Co., in 1982 with more than 55 years of service. He was a communicant of St. Francis' Church and a fan of the Boston Red Sox and of Ted Williams. He volunteered to help cleanup during periods of flooding in his younger years and enjoyed skiing. He and his wife, the former Rita Margaret LaCoy, celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary May 23. They were married in St. Joachim's Church in Readsboro, Vt. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Christopher John Swenson of Lynchburg, Va.; seven grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters and brothers Marie Swenson, Margaret Nelson, Helen Elkey, Theresa "Babe" Swenson, and Robert and Thomas Swenson. FUNERAL HOME â€' The funeral will be tomorrow, Sept. 18, 2001, at 11 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be tomorrow from 9:30 until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home, which is in charge of arrangements.
