Sophie J. Gwozdz, 83
CHESHIRE, Mass. — Sophie J. Gwozdz, 83, of 308 Fales Road died early Thursday morning, Oct. 24, 2013, at North Adams Regional Hospital.
Born in Cheshire on Oct. 17, 1930, a daughter of Jan and Karolina Bulsa Piekos, she attended Cheshire elementary schools, and graduated from the former Adams High School with the class of 1948.
Mrs. Gwozdz was director of the school lunch program at St. Stanislaus Kostka School in Adams for more than 20 years, retiring in 1991. She also assisted in the operation of the family farm, Mizpah Dairy in Cheshire, from 1954 until 1970, was employed for several years at the former Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams.
She was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and was a communicant of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Adams for many years. She was well known for baking and decorating cakes for many occasions.
Her husband, Walter J. Gwozdz, whom she married on Sept. 11, 1954, died on June 1, 1970.
She leaves three sons, John J. Gwozdz and his wife, Ann, with whom she resided, Mickey Gwozdz and his wife, Margy, of Cheshire, Bernard F. Gwozdz and his wife, Wendy, of Pittsfield; three daughters, Marie H. Gwozdz and her husband, Bruce Wood, of Pittsfield, Katherine A. Gwozdz and her husband, Gary Rollins, and Carol LeFebvre and her husband, Peter, all of Cheshire; a sister, Victoria Zabawa of Southampton; a brother, Frank Piekos of Cheshire; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by seven brothers, Josef, Stanley, Walter, John, Henry, Thaddeus (Tadeusz) and Kazimier Piekos; and by two sisters, Emilia Jajko and Marie Adamczek.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Gwozdz will be held on Monday, Oct. 28, at 10:45 from the Paciorek Funeral Home, 13 Hoosac St., Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at noon in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Cheshire, celebrated by the Rev. David R. Raymond, pastor. Burial will follow in Cheshire Cemetery.
