Lorane M. Whitcomb, 88

STAMFORD, Vt. — Lorane Margaret Whitcomb, 88, of Main Road died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at the Center for Extended Care at Amherst.

Born in North Adams, Mass., on Feb. 27, 1926, daughter of James and Leona Yarter Moir, she attended schools in North Adams and graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1944. She also graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1948.

Mrs. Whitcomb taught in the mathematics department at Drury High School for 28 years, retiring in 1990.

She was a communicant of St. John Bosco Church, a member of the North Adams Garden Club and a past trustee of the Stamford Community Library.

Her husband, Lewis Matthews Whitcomb, whom she married on Aug. 19, 1950, in in the former St. Francis of Assisi Church in North Adams, died Dec. 20, 2012.

She leaves two daughters, Judith A. Whitcomb and her wife, Cheryl Sponburgh, of Amherst and Mary Jane Whitcomb of Bernardston, Mass.; two sons, J. Michael Whitcomb and his wife, Lynda, of Derwood, Md., and David A. Whitcomb and his wife, Donna, of Stamford.

Another son, John Whitcomb, died in infancy.

FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial to celebrate the Life of Mrs. Whitcomb will take place on Monday, July 21, at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church in Stamford. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Stamford Volunteer Fire Department or the Berkshire Humane Society through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247.

The family wishes to thank At Home TLC and the West 2 staff at CECAA for their tender care and support.
