Roberta May Ryan, 99

NEW ASHFORD, Mass. — Roberta May Ryan, 99, a longtime resident of New Ashford, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at Mount Carmel Care Center in Pittsfield. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 19, 1914, a daughter of Robert and Mazie Cronk Wood, she attended schools first in Brooklyn and later in Oceanside, N.Y. Mrs. Ryan and her husband, John Oliver "Jack" Ryan, operated the Spruces Motor Court on Route 7 from 1952 until retiring in 1983. She served on the New Ashford Board of Health and as a library trustee. An active member of Evangelical Free Church in Pittsfield, she also taught a weekly Good News Club for children and Ladies' Bible Study. Her husband, whom she married July 28, 1938, died Dec. 21, 1992. She leaves two sons, John O. Ryan Jr. of Mouth of Wilson, Va., and Robert P. Ryan of New Ashford; two daughters, Sandra J. Vile of Hollowville, N.Y., and Roberta M. Swicker of Lanesborough; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters Violette Anderberg and Jane Kellermann. FUNERAL NOTICE — A Celebration of Mrs. Ryan's life will be held Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 6 p.m. at Evangelical Free Church in Pittsfield, with the Rev. David Beguin, pastor, officiating. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Evangelical Free Church's project for the handicapped through Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams.
