Martha Voisin, 91

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Martha Moore Hayes Voisin, 91, passed away on July 27, 2016 at Berkshire Place in Pittsfield.

She was born on November 11, 1924, in Charlotte, N.C., to Thomas C. Hayes and Martha Moore Hayes. Martha grew up in Charlotte and after graduating from high school, she furthered her formal education at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She continued further studies at The New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Mass., where she majored in piano and minored in harp. It was in Boston where Martha met Roger Voisin.

Professionally, Martha gave private piano lessons to children and young adults at her home at Moss Hill Road in Jamaica Plain. She furthered her teaching career at Dexter School and Southfield School in Brookline, Mass., where she taught for over 20 years.

Martha met Roger on the steps of Symphony Hall in 1948. They were married on April 9, 1949 at Emanuel Church in Boston. They were happily married for 59 years. Martha was and remained a member of Trinity Church in Boston. She was active on numerous committees associated with The Boston Symphony Orchestra. She was a member and officer of The Stockbridge Bowl Association and Mah-kee-nac Shores Association in Stockbridge. She was an officer and avid member of The Stockbridge Golf Club. She and her family spent many happy summers at their cottage on Mah-kee-nac Shores.

Martha is affectionately remembered by friends, students, musicians and conductors for her gracious hospitality and renowned cuisine at her home. Many of Roger’s students who couldn’t make it home for the holidays found a home with them at Moss Hill Road.

Martha is survived by her son, Peter G. Voisin of Hendersonville, N.C., and his wife Pamela Voisin and their children Christiane and Maria Voisin and Candice McDonald and her husband Jeremy.; her daughter Anne M. Roy and husband Joseph Roy Jr. of West Stockbridge, Mass., and their children Jennifer Roy Hallock and husband Jim, Melissa A. Seward and husband Stephen and Joseph P. Roy and wife Mary K. Roy; great-grandchildren Mary Alpert, Caitlyn Alpert, Shannon Hallock, James Hallock, Abigail Hallock, Emma Seward, Connor Seward, Chloe Seward, Alexander Roy and Zachery Roy, all of West Stockbridge, Mass.; her niece Betsy Gefaell; and her nephew, Tom Hayes.

Martha was predeceased by her husband Roger L. Voisin; her brother Thomas C. Hayes, Jr. and sister-in-law Lindsay Hayes.

The family wishes to extend special thanks for the exceptional care that Martha received while at Pine Hill at Kimball Farms, Berkshire Place and also from HospiceCare in The Berkshires.

Funeral notice: A memorial service will be held at The First Congregational Church of Stockbridge on Aug. 15, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. Kelly Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
