Jannette L. Bishop, 87

POWNAL, Vt. — Jannette L. Bishop, 87, a resident of Lincoln Street, passed away September 3, 2016, at Berkshire Medical Center. 

Jannette was born in Pownal on February 1, 1929, the daughter of Ralph and Mildred (Crosier) Mattison. She received her education in Pownal schools, graduating from Bennington High School, class of 1947. 

Jannette worked with her husband Ralph in the family business, Bishop's Express, the Ladd Brook Motel and Restaurant, Benn-Powell, Salem Supermarket and then worked in food service at the Pownal Elementary School for 25 years, retiring in 1996. 

Jannette enjoyed bowling and was an avid reader. She was a 30-year member of the Pownal Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, East Pownal Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years to present, instrumental in starting the Pownal Rescue Squad from 1978 to present serving as treasurer from 1982-2013. She served as Treasurer for Pownal Fire District #2 from 1991-2013, volunteered at bingo for American Legion Post 90 and the Pownal Fire Department and was a member, Past President and Treasurer of the Vermont State Ladies Auxiliary from 1954-2010. 

Jannette is survived by her son, Gary Bishop of Pownal; brother Clarence Mattison (Dona) of Navert, Fla.; sister April Knapp (Robert) of Pownal; grandchildren Amanda Morse (Tyson) and Taylor Bishop, both of Pownal; and great-grandchildren Alexis and Kenley Morse. 

She was preceded in death by brothers Chester and Perry Mattison and sister Lenora Beals. 

Funeral notice: Funeral services for Jannette will be held Friday, September 9, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Pownal First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal. Visiting hours will be held at the church Friday, September 9, 2016, from 10 to 11 a.m. one hour prior to the service.
