Frederick G. Thompson Jr.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Frederick George Thompson Jr., 68, of 128 White Oaks Road died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2004, at home. Born at home on Cole Avenue on July 30, 1936, son of Frederick G. Thompson Sr. and Doris Buchanan Thompson, he attended the former Williamstown High School, where he played varsity sports. He enlisted in 1954 in the Army Reserve, then transferred into the Air Force shortly after. He was stationed in Texas, Wyoming and Alaska, where he crossed the Arctic Circle. Mr. Thompson was employed by the Williamstown Highway Department, beginning as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator in 1966 and working his way up to highway superintendent in 1982. He retired in 1989. As a teen, he worked on the Vanderbilts' Crooked Creek Farm and at H.D. Moore's Sand and Gravel Co. He also was employed by the McMahon Chevrolet dealership and with several local contractors. He owned a business that put in gravestone foundations until selling it in 1974. After retiring, he worked part time at Storey Communications, Taconic Lumber and Sweetwood Retirement Community, and at Berkshire Morrison in North Adams. An avid hunter and fisherman, during the 1970s and '80s he was a member of the Mount Greylock Archers, winning several trophies in regional tournaments. He practiced archery until 2001, when a stroke left him disabled. He was a member of Richard A. Ruether Post 152 American Legion. He and his wife, the former Dolores Desormeaux, were married Sept. 27, 1960, in Williamstown. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Frederick G. Thompson III and his wife, Sherri, of Dalton and Carl Lee Thompson and his fiancee, Amy Bailey, of Hudson, N.H.; a daughter, Linda Beth Thompson of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Isabel Nault of Bennington, Vt., and three grandchildren, Alexyss Calhoun, Carl Lee Thompson Jr. and Caitlyn Anne Thompson. FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Thompson will be conducted Saturday at 2 at Sherman Burbank Memorial Chapel, Williamstown, by the Rev. Peter Elvin, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, Williamstown. Burial will follow in the veterans' section of Eastlawn Cemetery with full military honors. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, will be Friday from 5 to 8. Memorial donations are suggested for Village Ambulance or Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center through the funeral home.
