George E. Moreau, 84

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - George Edward Moreau, 84, formerly of 85 Eagle St., died Wedneday, Feb. 12, 2005, at North Adams Commons, where he had resided since April 17. Born in North Adams on June 29, 1920, son of George W. and Grace E. Northup Moreau, he moved to Williamstown as a child and graduated from the former Williamstown High School, where he was a three-letter athlete. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the Seabees from 1943 to 1945. Following the war, Mr. Moreau was employed for several years by the former Mount Hope Farm in Williamstown and, later, by GE. In the late 1940s, he joined the former James Hunter Machine Co., working in the sheet metal shop. He served as supervisor of design drafting and as manager of engineering services, and retired in 1984 as purchasing manager. He was a member and past treasurer of First Congregational Church. Following his retirement, he was church sexton for several years. He was also past president of the former Brayton-Greylock Parent Group and a member of the Parent Group Council and the North Adams Rotary Club. While president of the former North Adams Community Fund, he initiated a move to merge the UCF, the Adams United Fund and the Williamstown Community Chest into a regional organization, Northern Berkshire United Way. He resided in the town of Florida from 1980 to 1985, where he served as chairman of the Planning Board and as a member of the Board of Selectmen. He also was a volunteer for Northern Berkshire Habitat for Humanity and for the former Help Line. He leaves his former wife, Marilyn S. Eager Moreau of North Adams; two sons, William A. Moreau of the town of Florida and Phillip C. Moreau of Hinsdale; three daughters, Marilynn S. Kirby of Williamstown, Karen E. Moreau of North Adams and Virginia A. Moreau of Washington state; two sisters, Shirley Booth of Adams and Ruth Stokes of North Adams; an uncle, William Northup of Williamstown; an aunt, Bertha Young of Hancock; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A brother, Arthur Norman, and two sisters, Pearl Martin and Mary Jane Tovani, are deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE - The funeral for Mr. Moreau will be Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 6 at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME in North Adams. The Rev. Robert Kyte, pastor of First Congregational Church, Dalton, will officiate. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 until the time of the service. The family suggests memorial donations to either County Ambulance Service, North Adams Ambulance Service or the American Cancer Society through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
