Walter Richardson Jr., 77

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Walter Charles Richardson Jr., 77, of 60 Bachand Ave. died Wednesday morning, May 29, 2001, at home. Born in Adams on March 25, 1924, son of Walter C. and Elizabeth I. Jones Richardson, he moved to North Adams as a child and graduated from Drury High School in 1942. He also graduated from the former North Adams State College. He moved to Williamstown in 1971. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. A teacher for many years, Mr. Richardson taught at Eaglebrook School in Old Deerfield from 1950 to 1956. In 1957, he and his wife purchased the Roberts School for Boys, a tutorial school in Shelburne, which they operated until 1970. He also taught in Ware from 1970 to 1971, when he retired. After moving to Williamstown, he became a substitute teacher in Williamstown, Clarksburg and North Adams. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Donald H. Meacham Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8304 in Williamstown and the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and a former member of Lafayette-Greylock Lodge AF&AM in North Adams. His first wife, the former Ethel M. Black, and his wife, the former Helen Clark, are deceased. He leaves four sons, Randolph Richardson of Readfield, Maine, Mark C. Richardson of Winchester, N.H., Thomas J. Richardson of Madison, Conn., and William S. Richardson of Bethel, Conn.; a brother, Donald R. Richardson of Williamstown; a sister, Barbara J. Coody of North Adams, and eight grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE — Services for Mr. Richardson will be conducted Saturday at 10 with a Celebration of the Holy Eucharist in St. John's Episcopal Church, North Adams. The Rev. Donald G. Place, rector, will officiate. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams. Calling hours at AUGE-SAN SOUCIE-SIMMONS FUNERAL HOME will be tomorrow from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8304 Scholarship Fund through the funeral home, 46 North Church St., North Adams, MA 01247.
