Walter A. Sumner Sr.

Walter A. Sumner Sr., 65, of 1095 Mohawk Trail died yesterday at home of natural causes. Born in Clarksburg on April 4, 1940, son of Gertrude Witto Sumner and the late Stuart H. Sumner Sr., he attended schools in Stamford, Vt. From 1981 to 2002, Mr. Sumner was self-employed as a truck driver and logger. He also worked part time for Bisson Excavating in Pownal, Vt. He and his wife, the former Mary Ann Gregory, were married March 21, 1959, in Stamford. Besides his wife and mother, of North Adams, he leaves two daughters, Brenda Marie Bentley and Mary Chipchase, both of North Adams; a son, Walter A. Sumner Jr. of North Adams; two brothers, Stuart H. Sumner Jr. of Charlemont and Roger Sumner of Pittsfield; two sisters, Anita Grass of the state of Florida, and Janice Gottardi of Dallas; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Calling hours for Walter A. Sumner Sr., 65, will be tomorrow, Dec. 31, from 2 to 5 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, WEST CHAPEL, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Burial will be private. Donations are suggested in his memory. He also leaves a son-in-law, Stephen Chipchase; a brother-in-law, Brian Gottardi, and nieces and nephews.
