Leonardo Alcaro, 95

ADAMS, Mass. — Leonardo Alcaro, 95, of 205 East Road died Friday, July 24, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born in Borgia, Italy, on June 3, 1914, son of Leonardo and Vincenzina Cerallo Alcaro, he came to the United States at age 20 and attended night school at Drury High School until he attained citizenship.

Mr. Alcaro was employed by the former GE in Pittsfield for many years, retiring in 1972. He first worked at the former Arnold Print Works for a short time and part time at the former Apothecary Hall at 85 Main St. in North Adams.

He was a communicant of the former St. Anthony of Padua Church in North Adamss and a former member of the Sons of Italy. He enjoyed traveling to Italy and spending winters in Florida with his family. He took great pride in gardening, especially growing tomatoes and Italian pole beans.

He and his wife, the former Elena Grande, were married on Aug. 18, 1942, in St. Anthony's Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Joseph Alcaro of Adams, Mario Alcaro of Hollywood, Fla., and Vincent Alcaro of Cohoes, N.Y.; a sister, Teresa Grande of North Adams; six grandchildren, Joseph Alcaro of Norwell, Colleen Pete of Bedford, N.H., Sharon Yapougian of Eastham, Conn., Rebecca Alcaro, Gregory Alcaro and Andrew Alcaro, all of Williamstown; four great-grandchildren, Zola Alcaro, Noah Alcaro, Owen Pete and McKenzie Alcaro, and nieces and nephews.

His son Leonardo Alcaro Jr. and his brother, Gregorio Alcaro, preceded him in death.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Leonardo Alcaro will be Wednesday, July 29, at 10:15 a.m. from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in care of the funeral home.
