Richard H. Shand Sr., 78
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Richard H. Shand Sr., 78, of 94 Meadow St. died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at his home.
Born in Tewksbury on Aug. 18, 1932, a son of Florence Shand Cudworth, he attended Drury High School.
A decorated Army veteran of the Korean War, he enlisted on Sept. 13, 1949, and was honorably discharged on Sept. 10, 1956. During his service, he was twice injured in combat. His first injury on Sept. 20, 1950, garnered him a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and an appearance in the July 1952 edition of Heroic Comics. His second injury on Feb. 12, 1951, earned him another Purple Heart. He also earned the Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and American Presidential Unit Citation.
Mr. Shand was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in North Adams, retiring in 1987 after 30 years of service. He first worked at the former H.W. Clark Biscuit Co. before enlisting and for a short time at the former Windsor Print Works after his discharge.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 996 and of American Legion Post 125 and a member of Lafayette Lodge of Masons.
His wife, the former Mary Ann Oliveri, whom he married on Jan. 24, 1953, died Dec. 21, 2009.
He leaves his daughter, Maureen Scott of North Adams; a son, Richard H. Shand Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Williamstown; two sisters, Barbara Jirkovsky of North Adams and Lucille Nicholas of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Michael Scott, Allison Shand and Christopher Shand, and nieces and nephews.
Another son, Michael Shand, died in infancy in 1957.
FUNERAL NOTICE — Funeral services for Mr. Shand will take place Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at 1 p.m. from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels. Burial with full military honors will follow in Southview Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday, Dec. 2, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the VNA & Hospice of Northern Berkshire or the Williamstown Youth Center through the funeral home, 521 West Main St. North Adams, MA 01247.
