Fred C. Perry Jr., 83
CLARKSBURG, Mass. — Fred Charles Perry Jr., 83, of 911 River Road died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Mr. Perry had been the town's constable, dog officer and plumbing inspector.
Born in North Adams on Sept. 7, 1928, son of Fred C. and Mary Shand Perry, he graduated from Drury High School there.
He was an Army veteran.
Mr. Perry was employed by Williams College as a master plumber for 27 years until his retirement in 1991. He began his plumbing career with Harold Hahn Plumbing and later worked for R.I. Baker. He also operated his own plumbing business before joining the college.
He was a member and former trustee of First Baptist Church in North Adams and was an active volunteer at the church's Camp Ashmere.
In addition to being active in town offices, he also was on the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department and was a past president of the Clarksburg Lions Club. He was a former member of the Stamford Sportsman's Club and a member of the Clarksburg VFW and the Williams Lodge of Masons.
An avid fly fisherman, he enjoyed hunting and back-packing, and was a member of the Green Mountain Club, having completed The Long Trail. He also enjoyed bowling, camping and travel, towing his camper.
His wife, the former, Barbara May Wholer, whom he married on May 1, 1948, died on Dec. 14, 2002.
He leaves two daughters, Janice Poirot of Clarksburg and Barbara Etman and her husband, Andrew, of Gordonville, Pa.; two sons, Fred C. Perry III of Cheshire and Steven Perry and his wife, Jerilyn, of Clarksburg; a brother, Lauren Perry and his wife, Martha, of Priest River, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a former daughter-in-law, Diane Perry of Clarksburg, his longtime friend and camping companion, Beatrice Bissaillon, and nieces and nephews.
A brother, Robert W. "Chip" Perry died in 2005.
FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mr. Perry will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 at the First Baptist Church in North Adams. Burial will follow in Clarksburg Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 7 at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clarksburg Volunteer Fire Department or the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
