George Shakar, 87

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — George Shakar, 87, of 26 Versaille Ave. died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Adams on Aug. 7, 1924, a son of John and Anna Nichols Shaker, he attended schools in North Adams. Mr. Shakar was employed for many years at the former Sprague Electric Co. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. He was an avid candlepin bowler and participated in several leagues in the area. He was a longtime member of the Greylock Community Club and was a member of the Elks Club. He also enjoyed golfing and spending time with his son and family. His wife, the former Clara Baliakos, whom he married Oct. 8, 1949, in the former St. Francis of Assisi Church, died Jan. 1, 2003. He leaves his son, Richard G. Shakar and his wife, Diane, of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; a sister, Dolores Anello of the state of Florida; two, grandchildren, Nicole Cody and her husband, Billy, of Fort Ann, N.Y., and Shawn Shakar and his wife, Amy, of Glenville, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Patrick and Devin Shakar; a godchild, Edward Kata, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his son George Shaker and his siblings Michael Shakar and Marie Kata. FUNERAL NOTICE — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Mr. Shakar will be celebrated Tuesday, March 13, at 11 a.m. from at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in North Adams. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday morning from 9 to 10:30 at Flynn and Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. Memorial donations are suggested for the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association through the funeral home.
