Mary Williams, 97

April 16, 2012

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Mary Williams, 97, a longtime resident of North Adams, died peacefully after living a long fulfilling life on Sunday, April 16, 2012, at The Courville in Manchester, N.H.

Born in North Adams on Jan. 13, 1915, daughter of Herman Arthur and Katherine Doyle Haskins, she attended local schools.

Mrs. Williams was employed for many years as a pentagrapher at the former Arnold Print Works in Adams. She also worked at Ester Jaffee Ryan Boutique and Anne Kelly's Millinery, both formerly located on Main Street. Mrs. Williams was known for her flair for fashion and wore her clothing and hats to perfection.

She enjoyed gardening, golf, writing poetry and spending time with her large extended family. Her greatest pleasure was seeing her 80-year-old father gain fame as a primitive artist.

Mrs. Williams was an active participant in the Emblem Club and the Rosary Society at the former St. Francis of Assisi Church. She was a member of St. Francis' Parish until its closing. She also enjoyed participating in the Catholic Daughters, a church-affiliated organization.

Her husband, Andrew L. Williams, was killed in action in 1944 during World War II.

She leaves a daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Stuart Steele of Amherst, N.H.; two brothers, Robert Haskins and Kenneth Haskins, both of North Adams; three grandchildren, Erinn Steele-Murch of York, Maine, James Steele of Devon, Pa., and Kathryn Emond of Amherst, N.H., 11 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Frederick, Katherine Frederick, and Barbara Emery and one brother, Harold Haskins.

FUNERAL NOTICE — The funeral for Mrs. Williams will be Thursday, April 19, at 10:15 a.m. from Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, April 18, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home.

Recollections & Sympathy For the Family
Post Comment
My sympathies to Mary's family. I have good memories of the time she loaned us her father's paintings, brushes, chair, paints etc. for the Historical Society exhibit. Ken also had a video of each painting and Barbara was also there throughout the two-day exhibit. I put together a booklet as handouts to our many visitors. Rest in peace Mary.
