Pittsfield - The Berkshire Humane Society has announced that $10,000 was collected through their canister program in 2005. Community Outreach Coordinator, Karen Karlberg said, “We are very proud of the area businesses, their patrons, employees and our Canister Collection Volunteers who were able to raise the $10,000.â€
The much needed money goes directly to the care and feeding of the over 2,000 homeless animals that come to BHS each year. The small change and bills that find their way into the canisters located on the counters of prominent business can really add up over the course of a year.
2005 was an exciting year for this important fund raising program; a new style of canister was introduced and it seems to have been well received by the public, new canister sites and volunteers to collect the funds were also added. With this expansion of the program, BHS hopes to raise another $10,000 in 2006 towards a new Berkshire Humane Society van. The van is needed to transport sick and injured animals to veterinarian hospitals and the staff and supplies to and from various destinations throughout Berkshire County.
The Berkshire Humane Society Canister Program supporters have been successful in raising the much need funds that help BHS continue its mission of caring for the homeless animals in Berkshire County. Karlberg added, “We are grateful for the area business owners who allow us to have canisters in their place of business and welcome any others who would like to display a canister on their counter. They can contact me at 413-447-7878 ext 29 to arrange for a volunteer to leave collection canisters at their place of business or for more information.â€
The Berkshire Humane Society is an open admission shelter, providing refuge for homeless animals in Berkshire County, free educational programs for local school children, a pet-food bank for economically distressed pet owners, and through The Elizabeth Freeman Center; providing assistance of a safe haven for their pets during a time of crisis for battered and abused women. The Berkshire Humane Society Center is open Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 4 pm, Thursday evenings 5-8 pm, and Sundays 1-4 pm. The phone number is 413-447-7878. www.berkshirehumane.org
